The Double Fine Kickstarter Adventure

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

There’s an issue that needs to be addressed and that is the fact that there aren’t many game studios with years of experience these days that make games for their fans. Now there is an exception; Double Fine and 2 Player Productions,  about a month ago, launched a Kickstarter campaign, (initially starting with a quite humble asking goal,) where donations are to go to creating and documenting the making of a classic style Point & Click Adventure game. Think Full Throttle, Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle etc. However this kind of blew up outside of proportions and they have raised just over $2.3 million dollars at this point. This is amazing, especially for me, but for some reason backings have slowed down over the last few days. I imagine some people are holding on to their cash still, to shoot it in at the very end of the remaining 9 days, but if you are seriously considering backing to this project I suggest you do it now!

If you and plenty of others are waiting for the final day take note that the site might not handle all the traffic and you won’t be able to back. If you are just backing a dollar you are still contributing and it is better than not backing at all; read the newly updated backing tiers you should also notice that you get a lot of bang for your bucks. I justified my backing not only by getting a new game from my favorite genre, but also that I will get a very interesting documentary series regardless of how the game turns out. It can be used as part of a education in the game industry in general. I’ve personally learned more from watching professionals work than I have ever learned from a tutorial and I think that by this documentary I’ll learn a lot about how it’s like working in a studio environment in general. Ever have a dream about starting your own studio? Not solely because that’ll earn you more money than working for one, but because you want  to make your own ideas come to life. Backing can benefit you in so many ways apart from just getting a better game.

There is also a issue with not being able to donate because the US Amazon site won’t let you register you debit card, but according to this forum tread you can register to your local Amazon and still be able to donate.

Finally this post did go off topic of where this blog is going, but hopefully if reached out to someone and they did make the right choice by backing this project. If Tim can’t keep his promise of everybody liking you at least I will :)
